In 2010 Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger started to develop a mobile check-in app called Burbn. But it was too similar to Foursquare, so Systrom and Krieger refocused their app on photo-sharing and it became a popular feature among Burbn users and they renamed the app Instagram.
The initial release of Instagram was on October 6, 2010 for iOS. The first post was one of South Beach Harbor at Pier 38 from Mike Krieger, a few hours later Systrom posted a picture of a dog and his girlfriend's foot.
On April 3,2021, Instagram released a version of its app for Android phones, and it was downloaded more than one million times in less than one day.
Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock, with a plan to keep the company independently managed on April 9, 2012. On september 6, 2012, the deal between Instagram and Facebook officially closed with a purchase price of $300 million in cash an 23 million shares of stock.
The users of Instagram can upload pictures and short video's with geotags of the location on their account, which his/hers followers can see. If a user doesn't want that everybody can see his posts, he can set his account on private, thereby requiring that they approve any new follower requests. Users can also connect their Instagram account to other social network sites, by doing this, they can also share their pictures immediately on that site.
A user can save a picture of an other user into a private area in the app, out of the view of other users.
Initially the pictures could only be posted in a 1:1 ratio, but since 2015 the app also portrait and widescreen aspect ratios. Since 2017, the Instagram users can share up to 10 pictures or videos in one single post with the content in a swipeable carrousel.
In 2016 a new feature called Instagram Stories was launched. With this feature users can take pictures, edit the a little bit and post them on their Story. The uploaded pictures on those stories expires after 24 hours. Since 2017, users can broadcast themselves live but this video disappeares immediately after ending. A user can highlight his stories, those picture doesn't expire and stay at the account until the user delete it.
